ABSTRACT

The Miocene Pungo River Formation of the North Carolina continental shelf (Onslow Bay) comprises 18 fourth-order seismic sequences that can be grouped into three larger-scale sections which correlate approximately with third-order coastal onlap events. Fourth-order seismic sequences generally correspond to discrete depositional sequences. Seven regional lithofacies occur within these sequences. Microfossil distributional patterns can best be understood within the context of this seismic and lithologic framework.
