Abstract

Engineering geology in Japan started as a practical science with a focus on exploration for natural resources in the middle of the eighteenth century before shifting its scope to the construction sector and environmental protection, a scope which has persisted to the present day. Engineering geology has contributed to the construction of infrastructure such as railways, roads, dams and power plants, the mitigation of natural disasters induced by mass movements and to protection of the environment from contamination by general waste as well as by radioactive waste.
