At 100° C in the near-neutral solutions of ore transport, important concentrations of the aqueous species. ZnCl2 and Zn (HS)2, are found only in hydrothermal solutions of quite different compositions. At neutrality, (pH 6.1), concentrations above 1 ppm ZnCl3 are possible only when the total concentration of (H2S + HS-) is less than 10–8 molal. In contrast, 1 ppm or more Zn (HS)3- solubility requires at least 0.1 molal (H2S+ HS–). The very low sulfide concentrations, required here if transport of zinc were by chloride complexes, are incompatible with ore mineral compositions and stabilities (fs2). At 100° C and aC1- = 1–2, the predominant chloride complex, ZnCl2, and other complexes with NH3, CI", H2S, and HS" are less stable and soluble than Zn (HS)3 in the environment of ore transport. For deposits of this district, the only mechanism of hydrothermal transport of sphalerite presently known to be compatible with geologic restrictions is bisulfide complexing.
