Abstract

The Quinsam coal mine is located 20 kilometres west of the town of Campbell River on Vancouver Island. Access is by an all-weather gravel road that joins highway 28 at kilometre 20, west of Campbell River. It was previously owned by Brinco but was acquired by Hillsborough in February 1992. The mine has been in operation since 1985; initially as a small surface mine and now as a combined surface and underground operation. It is the only underground coal mine in operation in BC. Present annual raw coal production is over 500 000 tonnes and it is hoped to increase production substantially. The coal is sold to the Pacific Rim countries for power generation. The property has proven and probable reserves of 44 million tonnes of high volatile A bituminous coal.
