Abstract

This guide is for a one-day field trip to examine Early Proterozoic volcanic strata 7-13 km southwest of Bagdad, Arizona (Fig. 1). The itinerary (Table 1) must be closely adhered to for the Geological Society of America field trip because of the long driving times from Prescott in the morning and to Flagstaff in the evening. A longer day in the field would profitably allow more time at the planned stops and perhaps for other stops as well.

An advance version of a new 7½ topographic map of the area (SW quarter of the 1945 Bagdad 15' sheet) is available at the time of this writing, but not a copy suitable for reproduction as a figure on which stops can be more accurately shown than in Fig. 1. Individuals or groups wishing to follow this road guide independantly may obtain, upon request from the author, a copy of 1:24,000 scale topography showing the stops. Permission must be obtained from Cyprus Bagdad Copper Company, Bagdad, to cross private property (locked gates) in the vicinity of the Old Dick, Bruce, and Copper Queen mines. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are advisable, although the route could perhaps be traversed by two-wheel-drive, high-clearance vehicles if the roads are in good condition. Elevations in the area of the stops (Fig. 1) range from 3,500 to 4,000 ft.
