Investigations of spatial variability in ore deposits and other rock bodies have been approached through classical analysis of variance methods and through the theory of regionalized variables, as developed by the French school of geostatistics. The analysis of variance approach leads to estimates of variance components that can be used to form the variogram employed in geostatistics. The equivalence of the two approaches allows a possibly useful interchange of methods for sampling and statistical estimation.
