It has become necessary to predict with some accuracy the depth of penetration into softer sea-floor sediments of various size objects that fall through the water column. A provisional method for doing this has been developed utilizing data from tests on core samples. The method is based on the equivalence of the kinetic and potential energy of the falling object to the work done during progressive shearing of the sediment in the penetration event.
