Mechanical twinning in sphene (CaTiSiO5) has been produced in laboratory experiments at 8 kbar confining pressure, 25° to 500°C, ∈ = ~10−5/sec. The slip system is K1 = ~{221}, K2 = {131}, N1 = <110>, N2 = irrational, and s = 0.60. The conjugate twin law (K1 = {131}, K2 = ~{221}, N1 = irrational) was not observed. Increasing the temperature of the experiment by 500°C lowers the critical resolved shear stress for twinning (τc) by about 50 percent. At 500°C, τc is about 1.3 kbar.
