Integrated interpretation requires the representation of the reservoir as a single consistent model which can be displayed and interactively edited in three dimensions. To be practical, high-performance 3-D graphics systems and the requisite support software are essential. Integrated data display and editing tools allow interpreters from the various disciplines to view and edit the model from their unique perspectives.

The model representation must support more complex topologies than the conventional "layer-cake" model if reservoir models and their associated performance predictions are to be realistic. Surfaces represented by detailed grids derived from maps and seismic interpretation are used to form the "framework" for the geological interpretation. The use of parametric curves and surfaces provides a compact and editable representation of the geometry allowing the interpreter to quickly modify the model when new data becomes available or alternative "realizations" are required.

With these requirements, a prototype 3-D interactive integrated reservoir interpretation system has been developed. Geophysical and petrophysical data can be displayed and edited in the time domain on ribbon sections between deviated wells. Complex geological models can be quickly developed using parametric curves and surfaces. Property distributions over geological units derived from zone-averaged values can be displayed and interactively edited. Geometry and property distributions can be displayed and output as mapped surfaces. Volumetries capabilities and more direct interfaces for reservoir simulation are currently under development.
