Abstract

Name: Middle Cretaceous Prebetic and South Iberian platforms

Authors: R. Gimenez, J. Martin-Chivelet, and L. Vilas

Location: From 39° 20' to 38° 10' north latitude and 2° 00' W to 0° 20' east longitude, southeastern Spain

Geologic time interval: Late Albian to middle Cenomanian

Tectonic-sedimentary setting: Passive margin (Prebetic) and intraplate basin (Iberian)

Basin type: Epeiric shelf Paleoclimate: Dominantly arid, subtropical; approximate paleolatitude, 25° N

Platform type: Ramp to rimmed shelf

Platform geometry: 100 to 400 m thick, at least 110 km wide, and at least 500 km long

Facies and fossils: Fine to coarse skeletal carbonates (mainly dolomitic); minor amounts of marls and siliciclastic sandstones. Benthic foraminifera, rudists (mainly requienids and caprinids), chondrodonts, other molluscs, algae, and corals

Systems tracts: Fluvial, mixed carbonate-siliciclastic coastal, inner carbonate ramp, shelf margin, inner shelf, tidal flats

Stacking patterns: Four mainly retrogradational sequences followed by two progradational–aggradational sequences
