Abstract

The lower member of the Brushy Canyon consists of sandstone successions interpreted to have been deposited on the basin floor, in east-southeast-trending submarine-fan complexes (Beaubouef et al., 1999; see also Rossen and Beaubouef, chapter 103, this volume). In this model (Figure 1), basin-floor-fan complexes consist of down-fan, bifurcating channel networks that feed unconfined sheet complexes in the outer reaches of the system(s).

The Colleen Canyon area represents a basin-floor environment characterized by channel-to-sheet transitions. In this area, the lower Brushy Canyon Formation is approximately 70 m (230 ft) thick and is comprised of two approximately 30 m (100 ft) thick, sandstone-rich depositional complexes (LBC-1 and LBC-2). These complexes contain 10–15 m (33–50 ft) thick, laterally extensive sandstone packages that locally contain channel-fill elements. A broad (335 m [1100 ft]), shallow (18 m [60 ft]) channel-fill unit is located within the lower part of the section (Figure 2). The channel fill is exposed in three locations within the canyon and trends east-southeast (110°).
