Abstract

The Waikiekie Beach section extends a few kilometers (1.8 mi) north and south of the Waikiekie Stream mouth, and exposes the most proximal basin-floor-fan exposures of the Mount Messenger Formation along the coast. Several cycles are evident, each with fining-upward successions of thick-bedded facies, thin-bedded facies, and capping mudstones. These cycles appear very similar to those at Tongaporutu and Mohakatino, except that their degree of channeling is much greater than the underlying cycles. At Waikiekie, there is significant incision at cycle bases and within cycles, some lateral migration of channels, and clear evidence of channel infilling and depositional onlap of incised margins. The Waikiekie locality is also the first upsection (or most downslope) occurrence of significant shelly detritus and numerous ripple- and climbing-ripple-laminated sandstone beds.
