Abstract

Outcrops of the Carboniferous Ross Formation, western Ireland, provide laterally extensive exposures of deep-water sandstones. These outcrops have been the subject of much study over the last ten years, as interest in deep-water analog outcrops has grown (e.g., chapin et al., 1994; Elliott et al., 2000; Lien et al., 2002). The Ross Formation comprises part of the western Irish Namurian basin fill (Rider, 1974). It is underlain by the deep-water marine Clare Shales, and overlain by slumped, prograding slope deposits of the Gull Island Formation. Sediments were sourced from the southwest into an elongate, northeast-trending trough. The basin occupies a limited current outcrop area. Its southeast and eastern margins are not preserved, leading to ambiguity in interpreting gross areal facies distribution. However, details of bed geometry and scour features common in sandy turbidite deposits are well exposed.
