Abstract

The Grès de Peïra Cava turbidite system outcrops as an Eocene-Oligocene outlier in the outer Alpine fold-and-thrust belt of southeast France (Figure 1). It preserves the remnant of a confined turbidite basin deposited in a relatively small, deep-water subbasin of the Alpine foreland basin (Bouma, 1962; Hilton, 1994; Amy, 2000; Amy et al., 2004). Sediment gravity flows in this basin were confined by thrust-controlled bathymetry with some several hundred meters (-600 ft) of relief. A correlation framework has been established for the preserved basin-fill (>1 km [>0.6 mi] of stratigraphy) by matching time-equivalent beds and packages of beds using measured sections and photomontages (Amy, 2000). A 60-m (200-ft)-thick interval is presented showing proximal-to-distal changes in sedimentary architecture (Figure 3).
