Abstract

The Grès d’Annot crops out in a series of structurally defined outliers or basin remnants in southeast France and northwest Italy (Figure 1). These remnants represent the thick, sandy infill of an extensive Eocene-Oligocene foreland basin adjacent to the rising Alpine mountain belt. Subsidence was driven principally through loading by the growing Alpine orogen to the east, but basin-fill sediments were mainly derived from a separate source area to the south (Corsica-Sardinia massif). Alpine deformation was ongoing during basin filling, and the Grès d’Annot basin showed substantial compartmentalization due to basin-floor topography; the preserved basin remnants are thought to correspond essentially to topographically distinct subbasins which were connected during deposition. Sediment dispersal within the structured basin was strongly influenced by the paleotopography; hence, paleocurrent directions show significant local variations (Figure 1).
