Abstract

The Swan Hills Field is located in the west-central Plains of Alberta, 115 miles NW of the city of Edmonfon. Light oil (42 °API) and some gas have been produced since the discovery in 1957. the field produces from the Middle and Upper Devonian Swan Hills Formation at depths ranging from 7400 to 8700 feet. The limestones of the Swan Hills Formation consist of stacked stromatoporoid-rich reefal and shoal complexes. A laterally extensive platform forms the base of the Swan Hills Formation and is covered by localized buildups. The passage from the platform to the buildup at the Swan Hi11s Field was controlled by subtle syn-sediitfntâry structural disturbance. most of the porosity in the Swan Hills Formation is primary in oriprfn. The distribution of porosity and permeability is related to original sedimenWogical fabrics and patterns. The tlfht carbonaceous shaly limestones of the overlying Waterways Formation form the seal for this Stratigraphic trap. Zoned dolomite and anhydrite cementation in the Swan Hills Field was caused by eafly (pre-burial) recirculation of hot, modified Devonian sea water through the extensional structural framework. The Swan Hills field is the second largest oil field in Canada. It is the largest oil field in a carbonate reservoir. The initial volume of oil in place is estimated at 389 million m3 (2.45 billion barrels). Recoverable reserves are estimated at 144 million m3 (904 million barrels). To date 104 million m3 (652 million barrels) have been produced. In 1985 tertiary recovery (ethane miscible flood) started in part of the field.
