Abstract

A core study in the C. S. Dean "A," XIT, and SW Levelland Units of the giant Level land-Slaughter Field in Cochran and Hockley Counties, Texas, helped define the geologic factors which affect enhanced recovery operations. The general nature of the Permian San Andres Formation in the area is one of widespread stratigraphic zones (both porous and tight intervals) that can be recognized on electric logs, confirmed by core description, and correlated between wells. Zones 7 through 3 recognized in the C. S. Dean "A," XIT, and SW Levelland Units conform uniformly to regional dip from the northwest to the southeast at approximately 30 feet per mile.

Producing intervals of the San Andres Formation occur within a large-scale regressive sequence. Within the C. S. Dean "A," XIT, and SW Levelland Units, this sequence is divided into zones that record, from bottom to top, open marine deposits (lying below Zone 7) overlain by a thick package of restricted shelf and tidal-flat deposits (Zones 7, 6, and 5) and capped by supratidal-flat deposits (Zones 4 and 3). There appears to be a good correlation between porous reservoir intervals and subtidal deposits, which are cyclical in nature. Porosity and permeability patterns within each porous interval reflect variations in the original deposits. The most common porous lithofacies are skeletal and peloidal dolopackstones-wackestones with moldic and intercrystalline porosities.
