Abstract

The Arun Field is a giant gas-condensate reservoir, producing from an 1100-feet thick Miocene reef section in the middle of the North Sumatra Basin All core material has been examined, and a lithofacies model has been established Second-order gamma-ray responses were correlated with the Arun Limestone allowing the field to be subdivided into several mappable subumts Four facies associated with patch reef complexes have been recognized and mapped 1) coral encrusting-red-algal boundstones of the reef facies, 2) skeletal packstones with branching coral fragments of the near-reef facies, 3) benthonic-foram, mixed-skeletal packstones of the interreef lagoonal facies, and 4) benthonic-foram, planktonic-foram packstones of the surrounding middle shelf facies

Microrbombic calcite (microspar), resulting from the recrystallization of lime mud, provides a network of pervasive microporosity throughout the entire reef, there are no interbedded shales or other types of seals to interrupt the thick carbonate sequence at Arun Thus, all facies are in communication through microporous limestone Sediments originally rich in lime mud, generally considered of low reservoir potential, turn out to be the major reservoir facies by virtue of favorable diagenesis acting on otherwise nonporous lithofacies Thus, the diagenetic reactions creating porosity far outweigh the deposition controls on porosity distribution in this reservoir
