Abstract

Seismic and well log data are widely used in petroleum exploration to map the subsurface. The two data sources are complementary: seismic profiles provide an almost continuous lateral view of the subsurface, whereas well logs yield fine vertical resolution of the geology at the borehole.

In contrast to seismic, other surface techniques, including gravity, electrical, magnetic, and magnetotelluric (MT) methods, have lower resolution and are mainly useful for reconnaissance mapping in relatively unexplored basins to define the gross tectonic configuration of the sedimentary rocks. Seismic profiles can resolve, with relatively high precision, the structural and stratigraphic changes from the arrival times and amplitudes of the reflection events. Significant advances in seismic data acquisition and processing methods, derived from modern systems and control theory as well as from the computerized solutions of the acoustic wave equation, have led to breakthroughs in mapping complex configurations, as described in the previous chapters.

The bandwidth of seismic data constrains the vertical resolution of the subsurface; high-frequency data are essential for delineating subtle traps. Also, the seismic expressions of anomalies cannot be interpreted uniquely in terms of the geologic variables. Well logs can be helpful in the interpretation of seismic profiles in both respects, viz., they can unambiguously provide, at the borehole, a high-resolution estimate of many essential geologic variables.

The use of well logs ranges from small-scale field studies, where dense well control yields information of short wavelength, to large-scale regional studies, where sparse control is utilized for long-wavelength changes. Explorationists construct structural and
