A maximum understanding of seismic wave propagation in geomaterials is a natural aim for seismologists. Although theoretical developments are not hte subject of this course, even practical notions benefit from a minimum theoretical background, which clarifies some aspects. A minimum accuracy is also necessary to understand and handle concepts related to wave propagation

This section aims to remind us of the most important principles and terminology that will be used in the following sections. The description of anisotropy of geomaterials is given according to a thesis by Hocine Tabti (1997).
