Channel boulders in normally dry arroyos of the Anza Borrego Desert were used to estimate the characteristics of flash-floods associated with their transport. An algorithm was developed to assess the flow conditions of velocity, depth, and discharge present at the boulders' threshold of motion. This approach should be applicable to flood hazard studies in similar ungauged ephemeral streams. The methods presented here are useful in applications such as geomorphic and hydrologic reconnaissance surveys, environmental impact statements, and flood hazard analysis.
