A detailed records search was performed on the Carondelet Coke Works (1914–1987), St. Louis, Missouri, during the summer of 1995 to provide a thorough historical and geological background summary for the site area. This records search and review proved to be an extremely beneficial tool when assessing hazardous waste production, disposal practices, and geological conditions. The study uncovered a history of on-site pollution dating back to the mid-nineteenth century as well as pollution complaints and violations from the 1970s and 1980s. The geological search revealed a complex site geology including fluvial, karstic, and structural features. It may be possible to identify potential waste sources and migratory pathways and to plan for future investigations and remedial actions by utilizing the results of the records study.
