The United Nations Human Settlements Program notes, “Managing solid waste well and affordably is one of the key challenges of the 21st century, and one of the key responsibilities of a city government” (UN-Habitat 2010, p. xix). Improper waste management can lead to environmental degradation, soil and water pollution, and wildlife harm. Mismanagement of hazardous waste can pose significant health risks to communities and the environment. Waste management helps conserve natural resources by reducing waste sent to landfills and recovering materials that can be recycled or reused.
