This book was inspired by a successful international “Topical Session” on melanges at the 2007 Geological Society of America (GSA) Conference. Melanges (from the French, mélange, or mixture; the acutely accented “é” is unnecessary in English) have been the focus of considerable research by geologists for over 50 years. There are thousands of geological publications and presentations devoted to melanges.
