An F-class fly ash was tested in the laboratory for its physical and mechanical properties for use as a road sub-base in portions of a 2.1-mi (3.4-km) truck by-pass route in east-central Illinois. The testing showed that the fly ash would perform adequately and behave predictably as a road sub-base. Construction of the by-pass route started in early June 2002 and was finished in early September 2002.
