ON COVER – Deer Creek Canyon in Grand Canyon National Park, mile marker 140. The Tapeats Sandstone (550 Ma) overlies the Vishnu Schist (1700 Ma); a 1200 Ma hiatus recognized as the Great Unconformity. Angular cobbles of orthoclase feldspar, quartz, and rock fragments that littered the Proterozoic wasteland are a basal facies of the Tapeats in many places. Photo by Thomas W. Bjerstedt.
