The logging procedure aboard the CUSS I was somewhat unique as all the sondes had to pass through the drill pipe and the bit before entering the open drill hole. The maximum diameter of all logging equipment was therefore restricted to 3 inches. This limitation prevented the use of many standard logging sondes, and also necessitated construction of a set of geophones whose protective housings would meet the 3-inch requirement.
