Ehrenberg (2001) and I have followed opposing approaches toward explaining diagenetic features of Upper Jurassic Smackover ooid grainstones from Black Creek field in Mississippi. I made extensive observations and quantified porosity loss by mechanical compaction, cementation, and intergranular pressure solution (IPS). On the basis of these data, I proposed a speculative flow model to account for discrepancies in amounts of pressure solution and cementation between an upper, fine-grained ooid grainstone interval that experienced 33% vertical shortening but has 8% cement and a lower, coarse-grained interval that experienced 23% vertical shortening and has 16% cement.
