We wholeheartedly agree with Shanmugam et al. (1995) that care must be taken in applying the basin-floor fan model (see also Kolla and Macurda, 1988; Kolla and Perlmutter, 1993; Pickering et al., 1995). Shanmugam et al. (1995) clearly showed that some sandy deep-water deposits in the North Sea have been displaced and deformed by sliding and slumping.
