In 1968, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Committee on Statistics of Drilling (AAPG-CSD) made available its first geologic provinces code map (Meyer, 1968) and published an explanatory text for the map (Meyer, 1970). A revised edition in 1974 contained corrections for certain drafting errors in the original but did not alter the provincial boundaries (Meyer, 1974). The boundaries were drawn along county lines to simplify coding, making the county the smallest unit of location.
