The discussion by Daly and Lilly (1985) of our paper (Nunn et al, 1984) makes two important points: (1) the relationship between temperature history and maturation of hydrocarbons is still the subject of considerable debate (e.g., Lerche et al, 1984), and (2) the two most widely used models relating time, temperature, and organic maturity (i.e., Lopatin, 1971; Tissot and Espitalié, 1975) can give significantly different results, especially for older sedimentary basins.
