In a recent article, Nunn et al (1984) modeled the subsidence and thermal histories of the Michigan basin. Estimates of the thermal maturity levels of the sediments were derived by combining several of their results with the mathematical model of organic matter transformation described by Tissot and Espitalié (1975).

The results suggested to Nunn et al that significant petroleum generation has not taken place in Silurian or younger rocks.
