Abstract

Multichannel seismic data. Four principal phases: (1) Jurassic-Early Cretaceous sedimentation filled in basement irregularities, (2) Cretaceous deposition of a seaward-thinning wedge typical of Atlantic-type margins; (3) earliest Miocene current-controlled deposits preferentially deposited along the axis of the incipient Blake Outer Ridge; and (4) continuing early Miocene preferential deposition on the ridge axis and sculpting by the Western Boundary Undercurrent. Five angular unconformities, and associated bathymetric terraces west of the ridge crest, formed penecontemporaneously during phase four. The gas hydrate horizon is continuous across the northern Blake Outer Ridge and extends onto the shallow Blake Plateau as well.--Modified journal abstract.
