Abstract

Stylolites are major stress-related diagenetic features in sedimentary rocks. There may be some basis for the prediction of their occurrence. Point-load hardness mapping is useful as a tool in helping to define these variations and discontinuities. Once a significant interrelationship is defined between mechanical properties, petrology, and stylolite occurrence within a unit, stylolite location could be used as a tool in defining petrologic/mechanical variations on a large scale.--Modified journal abstract.
