Valia et al (1977) stated that the pebbly, glauconitic sand of the uppermost Piney Point Formation (Eocene) in the subsurface of the coastal plain of Delaware is “… undoubtedly of middle Miocene age” and represents the basal sand of the unconformably overlying Chesapeake Group. We find the data in their paper and the nature of the materials available for their study inadequate to support their unqualified conclusion.
