In view of the diverse opinions regarding the age of several units underlying the Smackover Formation of north Louisiana and south Arkansas, it is desirable to summarize briefly the work which has been done on this problem and to offer some suggestions concerning the probable age of these rocks. Only a brief and highly generalized description of lithologic types is presented; the original articles are recommended for more detailed descriptions and information relative to distribution of the formations. Attention is directed to the columnar section (Fig. 1) and index map (Fig. 2).
