In California, 441 exploratory wells were drilled, of which 31 were unsuccessful and 33 still active at the end of 1963; total footage was 2,397,505, a decrease of 74,436 from 1962. Ten new-field discoveries were 5 oil and 5 gas, most significant of which was the Brentwood oil field in northern California. Well completions, including development wells, numbered 2,850, up 125 from 1962. Production of crude oil was 300 million bbls; of natural gas, 646 billion CF; and of natural gas liquids, 26.4 million bbls. In Washington four unsuccessful exploratory wells, one a deep test of 12,920 ft. in the Tacoma basin, were drilled for a total of 21,730 feet. In Oregon, compared to 6 wells in 1962, one unsuccessful exploratory well was drilled for a total of 6,336 feet.
