Abstract

Recognizing an axis of symmetry concentric to a focus at Baltimore, Maryland, and a conjectured wrench fault which may involve a dextral offset of 80 or more miles along a trace no concealed, a reappraisal of the deep part of the Appalachian basin supports a concept wherein structures of the sedimentary y cover are independent of those in the basement, and suggests that depths of basement may be much less than generally calculated. Evidence is presented that the deep Appalachian moat, located east of the Allegheny Front, strikes toward the present Blue Ridge of northern Virginia, and that basement structures and lines of original sedimentation both strike into the Blue Ridge overthrust in southwestern Virginia.--G.D.C
