Abstract

Detailed lithofacies analysis and study of sedimentary structures establish NW.-SE. to NNW.-SSE. trends of sedimentation in the Mississippian of the Elbow Valley area, with shallower water and more restricted sedimentation generally on the E. or NE. The top of the Banff argillaceous facies is diachronous, being lower on the E. than on the W. The Livingstone Formation in the mountains is not correlative with the Turner Valley and Pekisko formations of the foothills as believed by Douglas, but only with the Turner Valley Formation.
