Abstract

Two representative types of carbonate nodules from fresh-water lake sediments of Miocene age were investigated using various geochemical tools. These included the X-ray diffraction analysis, stable isotope, work of the carbonate phase in terms of O 18 /O 16 and C 13 /C 12 ratios, wet chemical analysis, spectroscopical trace element determinations, and the infra-red analysis of the extractable hydrocarbon fraction. The objective of the present study was to unravel the mode of formation of carbonate nodules and the hydrocarbons inside the nodules.
