The majority of petroleum geologists are instructing, advising, or serving others through a knowledge of geologic science. Five attributes of the profession are: 1) the body of scientific theory that dates back to 300 B.C., 2) the ethical code, 3) the professional authority whereby employers or clients place full faith and responsibility in the judgment and skill of the geologist employed, 4) the community sanction of professional geologic practice, and 5) scientific and economic cultural contributions of benefit to society at large. Responsibility walks hand in hand with capacity and power. We have the capacity and latent power. We must elect to accept the obligation.
