Abstract

Outlines the geologic framework of the Atacama desert, in which late Precambrian? metamorphic rocks, upper Paleozoic, Jurassic-Cretaceous, and late Tertiary formations, and widespread extrusive rocks of three main cycles of Mesozoic volcanism are represented, and presents details of Jurassic and Cretaceous sedimentary sequences in five widely separated areas and of a late Miocene- Pliocene section in a sixth.
