Considerable difference of opinion is found in geologic literature concerning the origin of redbeds. Do they reflect arid or humid climates, continental or marine environments? It seems certain that redbeds can form under any of these conditions and that no single theory satisfactorily explains all occurrences. Interpretations of marine origin of redbeds have been made by several writers (Fenneman, 1905; Branson, 1915, 1927; Thomas, 1934; Peterson, 1954; and others), but in most reported occurrences supporting evidence of origin is suggestive rather than conclusive.
