Introduction.—The Boskydell sandstone of the lower Tradewater group (Pennsylvanian) in southwestern Illinois has a marine fauna and contains small quartz pebbles as a conspicuous conglomeratic component in the vicinity of the type locality. It appears that this horizon has a broader distribution than has heretofore been recognized. If so, the Boskydell sandstone may be important to correlation in a section of the lower Pennsylvanian lacking in marker beds.
