Several years ago the separation-based fault classification was proposed (Hill, 1947). The terms right-lateral and left-lateral, which were recommended then, are now commonly used, along with the other terms, normal, reverse, and thrust, for types of faults. However, this fault classification has been often misused or misinterpreted as indicative of actual relative movement (slip), whereas apparent relative movement (separation) was specified (e.g., see “left-lateral fault,” p. 166, Glossary of Geology, American Geological Institute, 1957).
