In order to eliminate the recording of two directions, that of the strike and the dip, in field practice the writer has had installed in his Brunton compass a second and non-magnetic (aluminum) needle arm joined to the magnetized arm at 90°3 (Fig. 1). This arm is colored red. In using the compass the modern azimuth (360°) graduated circle is much to be preferred over the older quadrant type.
