Recent discussion of the occurrence of magnetite and ilmenite in red sediments (Miller and Folk, 1955) stimulated re-examination of thin sections prepared for an earlier study of Pennsylvanian and Permian stratigraphy in the Crested Butte Quadrangle, Colorado (Langenheim, 1951, 1952). The occurrence of magnetite and ilmenite in sections of red and other colored rocks is here tabulated.

These data support Miller and Folk’s (1955) report of abundant magnetite in redbeds, but also indicate that associated non-red rocks may also contain significant quantities of magnetite. Examination of the sections showed that magnetite in the non-red rocks was equally as prominent as...
