In the Bulletin for November, 1953, John Eliot Allen3 stated that “ … the type localities described by Gregory (1917) for the Tohatchi shale consist of Upper Cretaceous rocks which conformably overlie the Menefee formation of the Mesaverde group, and are unconformably overlain by the Chuska sandstone of Pliocene(?) age.” In the Bulletin for April, 1954, Caswell Silver4 discussed Allen’s note and stated his opinion that Allen omitted pertinent information included in Gregory’s original treatment5 and indicated that Allen’s description of the Tohatchi shale (spelled “Tohachi” in the original description) was confusing and based on a miscorrelation...
