Abstract

Describes Triassic salt structures in the southwest part of the Aquitaine basin, France, and discusses the part played by Hercynian (Paleozoic) basement faulting, successive phases of the Pyrenean orogeny, and differential plasticity and density of the saline deposits and overburden in their formation. Asphalt seeps and subsurface indications of oil and gas are associated with several of the diapiric structures, but exploratory drilling has failed to locate commercial quantities of oil.
