Abstract

Summarizes results of geologic reconnaissance and geophysical exploration carried out to evaluate the petroleum possibilities of the Mesozoic-Tertiary section overlying Paleozoic basement rocks in the Andean foreland region of eastern Ecuador. Potential oil source beds include black bituminous shales of the Santiago (Jurassic) and Napo (Cretaceous) formations, and favorable structures and reservoir rocks are present in the region, but test drilling to date has located only small amounts of heavy black residual oil.
